Widely acclaimed,
Indeed, 63% of them claim that they have never forgotten it, and 61% consider it important. Nearly half of all mothers in France say they would be upset if their children did not wish them a happy Mother's Day (2022 Omnibus YouGov study).
But what do children give to their dear mum? The traditional bouquet of flowers remains the favourite gift for a quarter of respondents, followed by perfume, chocolates, a personalised gift, personal care products, and of course, jewellery!
Let us remember that as early as ancient Greece, springtime ceremonies were held in honour of Rhea (Cybele), the mother of the gods and Zeus. The Romans celebrated matrons on March 1st during the Matronalia ("matronal festivals") and Cybele during the Hilaria.
Organised in the fertile season, these celebrations of motherhood have existed around the globe.
From the 15th century, the English have celebrated Mothering Sunday, while in 1908, Mother's Day as we know it today was established in the United States by activist teacher Anna Marie Jarvis in honour of her mother.
Officially recognised by the U.S. government in 1914, it was gradually adopted by many countries, including the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and Australia.
In France, the village of Artas in Isère claims to be the cradle of Mother's Day. On June 10, 1906, mothers of large families were celebrated, and two mothers of nine children received a High Maternal Merit award, created by Prosper Roche, founder of the Union Fraternelle des Pères de Famille Méritants d'Artas.
However, it was not until the end of World War I that it was more widely adopted…
Regardless of its origins, this celebration remains the perfect time to show appreciation and attachment to one's dear mother. And what better way to proclaim your love than with timeless jewellery? Of course, there’s the iconic macaroni necklace, which warms the heart when crafted by the clumsy hands of a young child... But for those seeking more sophisticated options, jewellers offer a myriad of possibilities.
By exploring the collections of major houses, Parisian brands, and especially more niche designers to break away from the 'herd mentality' and secure more beautiful pieces at better prices, you can find that rare gem, a piece that will make a subtle impact at a reasonable price: a precious motif mounted on a cord, a ring set with fine stones, a dainty necklace, or stud earrings – there is something for every mother.
Whether rock, romantic, sporty, fashionable or classic, there is a piece of jewellery for each...
